Our Story

After 20 years working in the hospitality sector, Myhandyvan founder, Nathan has developed a passion for exceptional service. Taking time to be with customers and understand what they wanted or needed not only allowed him to provide a much better service but it also allowed him to enjoy his job more. His favourite part of the week was a busy Saturday dinner service, touching tables and working alongside his restaurant teams, serving dozens of tables. For the last seven years he worked in hospitality, a large part of Nathans role was to develop and implement operational policies and brand operating standards – he literally wrote the book on training people to deliver exceptional service (for one company anyway)

So, when Nathan set up a removals company, he was determined to bring some good, old-fashioned hospitality to the removals sector.

Founded in January 2023, Nathan spent months head hunting and recruiting experienced, and friendly removal professionals who shared his passion for excellence. Now a team of 5, they have years of experience between them. From office relocations to domestic removals, clearances, and courier services, they’ve booked it, wrapped it, packed it, moved it and built it.

As well as going out of our way to make your move as stress free as possible, we also work hard to make sure we do our bit for the environment. There’s no way of getting away from the fact that moving home or office produces waste but at Myhandyvan we believe in making small decisions that add up to making a big difference. Here’s just a couple of things we do to keep our carbon footprint as low as possible:

We only use Euro 6 compliant vans – Euro 6 is an emissions standard set by the government as part of its clean air strategy. This means our vans are the cleanest diesel engines on the road.
Our packing materials are made from recycled material and all of our boxes are recycled.
We donate any reusable items of furniture and clothing to local charities when we carry out a clearance on a property. Helping ovoid landfill and helping out local communities.

How much does it cost to move house?

The cost of moving home can vary dramatically but here’s some average prices for you. These prices exclude packing and any disassemble / reassemble work needing to be done and are for a local move.

What affects the cost of a home move?

The short answer is that everything about your current and new home may affect the cost. Access for parking the vans, stairs, how much furniture needs moving, even how well you pack. When you’re getting quotes from removal companies, the information they ask you for is to help them calculate how long it will take how many people and vans to move you to your new home.

The best thing you can do is invite two or three removal companies to quote for your move and then compare quotes. Remember that it’s not always about the cheapest quote. We pride ourselves on being the best value removals company in Manchester, but we’re not the cheapest. Choose the removals company that fills you with confidence that they understand what you need and will be there for you on moving day.

How do I choose the right moving company?

The good news is also the bad news with this answer, there are so many home removal companies out there, you have plenty to choose from. Unfortunately, there are so many to choose from and they’re not all great – as with any service, there are those that excel and those that just want a pay day at the end of the week.

Larger national companies usually charge significantly more than local companies, but you do tend to get a better quality of van. National companies are also usually better if you need to travel far and require storage for a short period. Local independent moving companies tend to be more flexible in the support they offer on your moving day, they also usually cost less as they don’t have a central team to pay for and they almost always use smaller vans so they don’t have the big salaries of HGV drivers to cover.

It’s best to spend a few hours searching on the internet: get at least 3 quotes, ideally after they’ve carried out a survey. This helps to avoid any surprises on moving day. The best price shouldn’t be the only consideration, choose the company that you feel will make your move as easy as possible.

What are the best packing materials?

We’ve written some handy hints and tips about how to best pack your belongings but simply put, quality packing materials are well worth their cost. Here’s out top 3 essentials:

A good, double walled box will help protect your valuables and stack in the removal vans, saving you space and cost.
Use parcel tape. Sellotape just doesn’t cover it and folding box bottoms and tops is asking for damaged belongings.
Packing paper is a good investment. Better for the environment than bubble wrap and it works just as well. You can buy it in rolls or sheets and its great for wrapping fragile items of padding out a box.

When do I start packing?

The sooner the better, within reason. Before you start packing it’s a good idea to have a clear out and either sell, donate or chuck all of your unwanted belongings. There’s no point in paying to pack and move things you just don’t want any more. Check out our handy hints and tips for best practice when packing but here’s our top 5 pointers:

Try and set a room aside for storing packed items in. It’s  good idea to pack this room first if you can.
Start by packing up rooms or items that you wont miss for a couple of weeks
Label your boxes clearly. You want the label to state what room its going into at your new home and what’s in the box
Clearly mark all boxes with fragile or heavy items in them. This way the movers know to either handle them with extra care or avoid putting them at the top of stacks.

New home need to know

With all of the excitement and stress of moving home, it’s easy to forget to get some of the essential information for the landlord or estate agent. Here’s a list of info its good to leave for your buyers or get from the vendor / landlord at your new place.

Boiler location, age, and service history
Paint colours on the walls. This is great to know incase you just want to touch up a wall and not redo the whole thing.
Local doctors practice
Neighbour info – who’s nice and who’s car parking space should you avoid
Great local places – shops, restaurants / take aways, etc

What is the best day to move on?

Choosing what day is best to move home on often causes some debate. There lots of variables to consider but when it comes down to it, it’s what works best for you and your move.

Here are a couple of things to consider and questions you may want to answer before deciding when to book the removals team for:

What’s the financial impact of moving on any given day: how much time will you need to take off work? Does your chosen removals company charge more for moving you at peak times or over the weekend? (Myhandyvan doesn’t, by the way)
If you’re buying a home that’s in a chain and you’re moving on completion day, it’s worth noting that because Fridays are the most popular day to move, the transactions can to take longer on Fridays. This can cause delays getting the keys to your new home and result in waiting charges from the removals company.
If you’re a family with young children, moving during the week whilst the kids are at school can make moving day a lot less hectic.

Why does Myhandyvan do phone surveys and not in person surveys?

When a removals company is putting together a quote for a prospective client, they carry out a survey to assess how much the move will cost them to carry out. Historically these home surveys have been carried out by a surveyor who would visit your home and measure up all of your furniture, the doorways, hallways and the access to your property. This information is key to calculating how many and what size vehicle, how many movers and how long you move will take.

At Myhandyvan, we do things a little differently, we use state of the art software with hundreds of items of furniture and their sizes programmed into it to calculate the volume of your belongings. This software along with years of experience means that we are able to accurately calculate the volume of space needed on our vans for your move, over the phone. Our phone surveys can be done in a fraction of the time that a traditional survey and we pass that saving on to you, keeping your move a little more affordable.

Rest assured though, whenever there are items that may cause some uncertainty, we always pop round and make a full assessment before quoting.

How does the packing service work?

Packing can seem like an unsurmountable task; where to start, how to keep fragile items safe, when to start. We’ve got you covered. Book our full pack and free your time up for the more important things in life. If you book our packing service, one of our removals team will book a survey so we can assess what materials we need to safely pack all of your belongings. Don’t forget that we offer all packing materials on a use or return bases, meaning that you only pay for the boxes that you use.

After the survey, we’ll confirm our quote on email. If you’re happy with the price, we’ll book you in for packing. We recommend that we come and pack the day before moving day. This minimises the disruption to your life as you’re not tripping over packed boxes for weeks before you move home.

On packing day we’ll arrive with everything needed to pack up your home. When we leave, everything will be neatly packed, stacked, and ready for transit the following day. All of the boxes will be clearly labelled with what’s in them and what room they came from.

We’ll leave you with the items you need for that evening and moving day morning and an open box so you can box the last few items once you’re finished with them.

On moving day, when we arrive, we’ll pack up bedding, curtains and anything else that’s left before we start loading.
